AT A GLANCE

At the end of 2022, Keolis Lille Métropole, operator of the tram, metro and bus bus network of the city of Lille, was looking for a sustainable solution to increase the service life of the tracks and sleepers.

The tracks are mounted on concrete sleepers, but at the stops on flat concrete plates. Due to the heavy wear in this transition area, the track and sleepers must be completely renewed after 15 years at the latest.

This maintenance work is very expensive and time-consuming. Hence the desire of the operator to use sleepers that can absorb vertical loads without deformation. In addition, the new sleepers should prevent the screws, ensure a smooth transition to the solid
concrete plate and have a long service life.

The STRAILway polymer sleepers offered itself as the optimal solution.

STRAIL FRANCE supplied ready-drilled STRAILway polymer sleepers.

The installation was carried out by EIFFAGE RAIL and went quickly and smoothly.

The operator Keolis Lille Métropole is very satisfied with this solution and the STRAILway polymer sleepers has completely fulfilled the customer‘s expectations.

STRAILway –
THE polymer sleeper for Vossloh Cogifer France

STRAIL France started the homologation process with Vossloh Cogifer in 2016. Today STRAILway is accepted by one of the most important supplier of turnouts worldwide.

In 2018, STRAIL France received the first order to produce two floors of turnouts, 266ML in total of STRAILway . These both floors of turnouts are installed with the complete switches in the workshop of Vossloh Cogifer. All the sleepers are drilled and milled according to the switches geometry necessary. It’s around 1000 drilling and 200 milling per switches. After this step, the final customer of Vossloh Cogifer inspects the finished complete turnout at the factory building.

STRAILway and complete switches of Vossloh Cogifer were accepted by the final customer METRO DE SANTIAGO in CHILE with success. Our STRAILway embarked for a long journey from EU to cross the Atlantic Ocean to go around Cape Horn and then arriving in Chile.

After some internal test between STRAIL France and Vossloh Cogifer to check the compatibility of STRAILway for installation in concrete substructure, Vossloh Cogifer and STRAILway were selected again by the METRO DE SANTIAGO and provide 12 others completes turnouts. From January 2019, the STRAILway production is very active to produce more than 1.900 linear meter of STRAILway.

A QUICK OVERVIEW

FERROVIENORD, responsible for the railway infrastructure in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy. With 331 km of track (divided into 5 main lines) and 124 stations, it is the most important private railway in Italy. Always open to innovation, this is why FN has decided to test polymer sleepers in various applications such as bridges and switches.

The very close partnership and trust of FN, one of our most important Italian customers for decades, has given STRAIL the opportunity to supply two complete turnouts for renovation. The first turnout was located in the railway station of Cesano Maderno, the second on a main line in Milan (axle load 22.5 t / train speed up to 160 km/h).

The technical department of FN decided, together with STRAIL, to deliver the sleepers completely pre-drilled and pre-assembled. In this way, a very fast progress of work during the renewal could be guaranteed. All these activities were carried out by an Italian turnout factory. The sleepers were processed and assembled according to the construction plan. After everything was finished the turnout was dismantled, packed and delivered to the customer.

After more than a year on site, with daily and frequent train traffic, the feedback from the customer is very good.

ADVANTAGES

  • Life span > 50 years
  • Particularly resistant to all environmental influences
  • Can be processed without any special machines
  • Minimal maintenance effort

AT A GLANCE

In the course of new track construction, the wooden bridge beams on the steel bridge in Matzerdorf, which were already showing signs of deterioration, were replaced. Since the client (NÖVOG) was looking for a long-term solution, the decision was made in favour of the durable STRAILway bridge beams.

The reconstruction was carried out competently by the STRABAG construction team. Due to the special steel construction, the sleepers were individually adapted, which involved considerable drilling and cutting work.
The fact that STRAILway sleepers are particularly easy to work with and that no protective clothing is required for processing them, unlike with other products, is worth highlighting. The workers appreciated this tremendously. To allow the protective rail to be extended outside the bridge (double ribbed plate), 15 additional STRAILway sleepers
were laid. Here, too, the durability of the STRAILway polymer sleepers was the deciding factor.

  • Length: 337 Meter
  • Conditions: 2 turnout | axle load: 22,5 t | speed: to 40 km/h
  • Installation: October 2020

ADVANTAGES

  • Very good processing using standard woodworking tools.
  • Environmentally friendly.
  • Life span > 50 years.

A QUICK OVERVIEW

Together with DB Südostbayernbahn, two turnouts were equipped with STRAILway polymer sleepers as part of the operational test were installed. The turnouts serve as connection points between the DB network and a Chemical Park.
Due to local conditions, the wooden sleepers at one turnout were in very poor condition. Large trees overhang the track here and promote the rotting of the wood, resulting in a lot of overgrowth. An ideal location for our weather-resistant polymer sleepers.
The turnouts could only be converted manually, sleeper by sleeper, as it was necessary to guarantee access outside the closure period in order to allow unrestricted track access to the industrial estate during operating hours.
The pre-drilling of the holes for the rail fastening of the sleepers was already done in advance in the sleeper factory. The sleepers were installed smoothly within three days per turnout. The track construction team of Deutsche Bahn was impressed by the easy handling of our sleepers.
Without any additional work, the con-version could be carried out in a similar way to wooden sleepers.
